So you bought a historic building in Hillcrest?
Congratulations. You are living in a community recognized by the state and federal government as being historically and architecturally significant. They have placed the Hillcrest Neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places. Hillcrest is an exemplary example of a collection of early twentieth century architecture and one of the city’s first suburban developments. Its period of significance is from 1890-1940.
We hope you will take pride in living in the historic district and understand why is important to preserve. When buildings are destroyed we loose our distinct identity and sense of place, We lose the history in our community, rehabilitation is green building: the greenest building is one that already exists, historic preservation makes a great city—when science and art-based career individuals (aka “the creative class”) they look for communities with walk-ability and distinct architecture—these are characteristics publications like Kiplinger’s looks for when determining which city’s make their America’s Greatest Cities List.
